Double aortic arch in an infant treated surgically.
Among the causes of respiratory distress in infants and children must be included the interesting developmental anomalies of large arteries in the superior mediastinum. The tracheal compression which may result can cause respiratory disturbances such as dyspnoea, tachypnoea, and inspiratory retraction of the chest wall, as well as " wheeziness" or stridor. These disturbances are likely to be in...

In this case report, we present an infant who has a double aortic arch vascular ring anomaly. We emphasize the importance of maintaining a high level of clinical suspicion for vascular ring when evaluating an infant with the symptom of persistent stridor. Recognizing persistent stridor early and treating the underlying cause can, indeed, optimize outcomes. Case A 3-day-old boy presented to the ...

Anomalies of the aortic arch system may assume many different anatomic patterns. Some are only of academic interest; others are of extreme clinical importance and may at times constitute an emergency requiring prompt surgical intervention to save life. The anomalies of the aortic arch system which produce symptoms and which require surgical treatment are of three types. First, there are the “va...
متن کاملDouble aortic arch in an adult.
We present the case of a 60-year old man who complained of severe dysphagia caused by a double aortic arch (DAA) with a right-sided descending thoracic aorta. The left-sided aortic arch had a compressive segment located between the left subclavian artery and the descending thoracic aorta. Using left third thoracotomy, the segment, which caused compression of the oesophagus, was ligated and divi...

In conclusion, the diagnosis of DAA should be suspected in an infant with either biphasic stridor or feeding-related respiratory distress. Radiographic studies combined with appropriate thorough endoscopic evaluation should confirm clinical suspicion. Thoracotomy with surgical division of the DAA has given excellent long-term results.
